US History Class!

I am in Room 1506 and teach part-time. I teach periods 1, 3 and 5, usually on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

I use the pronouns she, her, hers. I have taught Social Studies at Shorewood High School since 1991, and love my job (most days)! I also taught at Einstein Middle School for a year when I first moved to the Seattle area in 1990. I have taken leave several times, to travel in Asia, work in El Salvador and have babies (both of my "babies" have now graduated from college).

I attended Mount Holyoke College and received my BA in Anthropology (with a strong emphasis in Political Science) in 1985. I spent my junior year near Brighton, England, at the University of Sussex (I still get together with friends I made!). I received my Master of Arts in Teaching (Social Studies) from Lewis and Clark College in 1988. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in History/Social Studies. I love to learn, and regularly attend and help organize teacher development workshops that help me become a better teacher and make the world a better place (that, at least, is the goal). I usually camp and hike a lot in the Pacific NW; this past summer I had a chance to backpack several times- a total of 14 days in August! I also spent a good amount of time, as I like to do, examining US History through the lens of current events, and reading many thinkers on various topics related to history and politics, as well as plenty of fiction. I look forward to learning a lot from and about you!

My Current Reads/Sources: I am currently reading The Sweetness of Water, and recently read The Candy House, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and some fun mysteries. I get and read Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Funny Times, Ms. Magazine, the Seattle Times (daily), the New York Times, the Washington Post, other magazines, and I listen to public radio news daily. Some of the books I have read recently that stick with me: There, There, So You Want to Talk About Race, The Overstory, Days without End, Braiding Sweetgrass,

Pachinko, and many more.
